Thailand and its environment

What can the average visitor to Thailand do to minimise the impact of their visit on the environment? We recommend the following:

- Don't buy coral or sea shells – it's illeal to buy or sell either
- Avoid all restaurants serving 'exotic' wildlife species
- When using hired boats, insist captains moor away from the coral reefs
- Refrain from purchasing plastic bottles wherever possible. Where there's a choice, request glass water bottles, which are recyclable int Thailand. The deposit is refundable when you return the bottle to any glass bottle vendor.

Environmental organisations in Thailand

Thailand is rich in its diversity of flora and fauna. Yet, like many developing countries, the impact of economic growth has a severe impact on native species. There are many organisations working to protect the Thai environment. For particular environmental issues affecting Thailand Greenpeace have a great regional site: www.greenpeacesoutheastasia.org
