Shopping: hookah pipes to henna; sweetmeats to spices

It’s a little known fact that the Egyptian capital, Cairo, is spectacular for something other than the Pyramids: shopping. Downtown Cairo is a huge bustle of clothes, cloth and shoe shops. Equally enticing are the city’s huge bazaars, giant huge sprawls of street traders and shops selling anything from belly-dancing costumes to bananas; an enticing melange of hookah pipes, henna, sweetmeats and spices.

Egypt’s Bedouin tribes also have a tradition of textiles. A cottage industry of handcrafted bags, shoes and shawls has sprung up to provide an income for these traditional Muslim women. Today this project employs several hundred women in their desert encampments, producing delightful hand-embroidered bags and accessories.
