Carbon Offsets and Responsible Travel

Yoga Travel takes it's responsibilities as a holiday operator seriously. That's why we offset the carbon from your flights, and have have developed our responsible tourism policy. Thus our holidays are not just about your own health and well-being, they're about the people we work with and the sustainablity of the environment in which we operate.

Carbon offsetting
Carbon offsetting involves calculating the amount of CO2 your flight generates, then investing in schemes which take that CO2 out of the atmosphere. So, for example, if a flight from London to Cairo emits 200 tonnes of CO2 and has 200 passengers, each passenger is 'liable' for 1 tonne. When you Carbon offset a flight, you invest in schemes which reduce or absorb that amount of emission.Such schemes are wide and varied. They include planting trees , providing low-energy lightbulbs to developing countries, replacing wood-burning stoves with dung-burning ones or investing in renewable energy innovations. At Yoga Travel we use the reputed supplier Carbon Neutral to offset all our flights.

An innovation: having your cake and eating it?
There remains considerable debate surrounding carbon offsetting. Some argue that the CO2 emitted by flights shouldn't be put into the atmosphere at all. While this point has some validity, it means: a/ you could not travel by plane and b/ we'd go bust. As a step towards counterbalancing this point, Yoga Travel promotes the idea of double offsetting.Double offsetting means you offset that tonne of carbon - twice. Yoga Travel already pays for your flight's CO2 to be balanced. We suggest you visit Carbon Neutral , use their carbon calculator and do the same again and so removing an equivalent amount of CO2 from the atmosphere, thus leaving us - and the planet - all better off.

Travelling responsibly is an antidote to mass tourism. It's not only about enjoying yourself – it's about discovery, learning and fulfilment, rather than just ticking places off a list.Via our resonsible tourism policy we aim to bring you closer to local cultures and environments by involving local people in your holiday. Local people can show you their cultures and ways of life far better than a guidebook can, and by involving them they also earn much-needed income.

We recognise that our holidays also have an environmental impact and aim to mitigate that wherever possible. By offsetting our flights, encouraging the most effective use of water, adhering to national park guidelines and minimising waste we aim to encourage and spread the word of best practice behaviour.
